Axis Camera Default IP Address and Login
Axis cameras fall back to 192.168.0.90 when no DHCP server answers. The account is root, and on any recent firmware you set its password yourself the first time you connect.
The address depends on your network
This is the detail that trips people up: an Axis camera prefers DHCP. It only falls back to the static 192.168.0.90 when no DHCP server responds. So on a normal office network the camera is not at 192.168.0.90 at all — it is wherever your router assigned it.
To find it, use AXIS IP Utility or AXIS Device Manager, both of which discover cameras by MAC address on the local segment. Cameras also announce themselves over mDNS/Bonjour under a name derived from their serial number.
The root account
Axis uses root as the administrative account — not admin. Historically the factory password was pass, and you will still find that documented across the internet, but Axis stopped shipping it long ago.
Since AXIS OS 7.x the camera is unconfigured on arrival: the first browser connection presents a page that requires you to set the root password before any other function unlocks. From AXIS OS 10.9 onward the camera additionally refuses weak passwords outright.
Recovering a locked camera
Axis provides a genuine hardware reset. Hold the control button while applying power, keep holding for 15–30 seconds until the status LED flashes amber, then release. The camera returns to factory state — unconfigured, DHCP-preferring, waiting for you to set a new root password. Unlike Hikvision, no vendor involvement is needed.
Why Axis cameras are worth patching
Axis publishes security advisories promptly and supports hardware for an unusually long time, which means firmware updates are actually available for old models. The CVE list below is per-model; where a fix exists, applying it is normally straightforward through the web interface.
