Locating the device

The factory address is 192.168.1.108, set statically. Dahua's ConfigTool discovers devices across subnets by MAC, which is the practical way to find a camera that does not match your network. NVRs and XVRs default to the same address, so avoid connecting two factory units at once.

Activation, not defaults

Like Hikvision, Dahua abandoned factory passwords after the IoT botnet era. Recent firmware ships the device inactive: the first connection through the web interface, ConfigTool or SmartPSS forces you to set an admin password and, importantly, to supply a recovery email address.

The classic admin/admin remains valid on genuinely old firmware, which is why it still appears in every list online and still fails on anything bought recently.

Password recovery actually works here

This is where Dahua differs from Hikvision in a useful way. If you supplied a recovery email at activation, the login page offers a reset flow: it displays a QR code, you email it to Dahua's automated address, and a temporary security code comes back. That code lets you set a new password without involving a dealer.

If no recovery email was ever set, you are back to contacting support with proof of ownership.

Exposure

Dahua devices carry a significant CVE record, including authentication bypasses that ignore the admin password entirely. Cameras port-forwarded to the internet for remote viewing are the usual casualties — a VPN into the network is the safer pattern. Per-model advisories follow.
